An elderly man with serious health issues consulted Erika Schwartz, MD for a medical advice for his medical condition. After Dr. Schwartz examined the medications and treatments this patient was subjected to, she decided to consult his cardiologist whether he would agree to completely change the therapy of his patient.

This patient was overweight and he suffered from low testosterone and thyroid levels, but also he had sleeping disorders which appeared as a result of the unbearable itching, caused by an advanced stage of eczema.

Dr. Schwartz has been trying to reach his cardiologist in a period of three weeks, and eventually, she succeeded. On the phone, she explained her opinion and suggested to eliminate the medications which contributed to the eczema of the patient, and she states: “The guy said to me, ‘I can’t talk to you. You don’t know science”. Dr. Schwartz said that she pointed that they have the same medical degree and she adds: “he hung up on me!”

After the discussion with his cardiologist, Dr. Schwartz explained all she had to her patient. After the talk, the patient decided to change his cardiologist and try the plan Dr. Schwartz suggested. The treatments suggested by Dr. Schwartz consisted of boosting the level of the thyroid hormones and eliminating the medication for lowering the high cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol).

At the beginning, the patient thought that this treatment would cause a heart attack, but as Dr. Schwartz explained that the correction of his hormones naturally will maintain the cholesterol levels low.

At this point, it is important to explain that the thyroid gland is an endocrine, butterfly-shaped gland which is located in lower front of the neck. The thyroid secretes two thyroid hormones: triiodothyronine and thyroxine, also known as T3 and T4. Namely, the T4 is turned into the active T3 in cells, and through the bloodstream, this hormone reaches the body organs.

The main function of the thyroid is to regulate the metabolism and provide energy, but this gland also has an important influence on the entire organism as it helps the organs to function properly.

Statistical data shows that hypothyroidism is the most common health issue linked to the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism is a condition of abnormally low activity of the thyroid gland. Namely, the gland does not produce sufficient hormones which are necessary for regulation of the body functions.
